Through art we open the experience of who we are. Art discloses perspective and creates understanding between humans. Creating art has taught me to be vulnerable, trust my eyes, believe in the infinite, and create from the heart.
My love for photography grew out of a desire to capture the landscape of human emotion encapsulated in its raw, honest form, exposing the vulnerability of being human, within the social confines of gender. As a mother of two girls, I am often transported to scenes from childhood. Childhood is the genesis of emotional expression. Through the media’s social manipulation, we are forced to adapt and inhale social gender norms. As we transcend into adulthood, our guarded emotional being is hidden from view, limiting our choices and denying us the diverse spectrum of gender. Through photography, I strive to create an awareness of the limited interpretations of gender and it’s emotional impact on those who do not fit into the socially prescribed gender boxes.
The challenge of an artist is to trust her voice. As a woman artist the challenge to create is fierce and loud. To create art as a woman is an activist act, breaking free from our tiny boxes.
~H.R. LoBue
“Using subtle digital manipulation to mimic the look of hand-colored photographs, LoBue's soft, Technicolor tones evoke daydream palettes and notes of vintage Hollywood.
Seeking to reveal hidden landscapes of human emotion, H.R. LoBue creates a through-the-looking-glass world of costumed characters that conjures bygone eras and the guileless theatre of childhood. Donning mad hats, romantic frocks, and Cinderella gloves, LoBue's whimsical characters enable her to summon forth and portray the world of children not as a subject, but as a secret language. Within this world are rich vocabularies of fantasy, wonder, curiosity and confusion—for LoBue, ready-made art awaiting discovery.
Declaring childhood the "genesis of emotional expression", LoBue accesses this magical realm by playing "dress-up" with those she photographs. As director, make-up artist and costume designer, LoBue is more a presence and creative participant in her own compositions than a detached observer.
Capturing both children and adults in their natural "habitat", where play is effortless and imagination is a means of psychological survival, LoBue gives her audience insight into the roots of vulnerability, the evolution of defense mechanisms, and the birth of personality.”

"H.R. LoBue is our guest Artist for November. She captures energy in the most dynamic way infusing color, movement, and distortion. This all combines to give the viewer a feeling of viewing the inner self of her subject...love at first sight...!"
